But the autofocus and particularly subject detection makes this thing “sing” whether it be shooting cars, birds, animals, airplanes, things you’re going to shoot with it. Now granted 6fps isn’t class leading these days, but wasn’t that long ago folks were using 6fps ala 5D mark III either. Only gripe? This kind of lens you want a larger EVF than the R8, but that’s acceptable, I’m really spoiled to have this kinda bang, in the footprint and I’ll be using lenses I don’t want a larger EVF for most of the time with this being a “reserve” lens for when I know reach is needed. The R8 grip is perfect for the weight/bulk of the lens. Not front heavy, back heavy, zoom is smooth to operate, IS is very effective, the rendering of the lens isn’t “cold” like the EF 70-300 IS USM II is, at least on the R8 (haven’t tried it on the R3 yet). So I actually get to shoot the thing after work today, and wow! It handles really well. Was more worried the impending rain was gonna soak me and the not water sealed lens. I did the whole walk without going, dang, this stinks. It’s like having a larger water bottle you buy at the gas station in your cargo shorts. So I quickly slap both the 8 month old in the stroller and take the 2 year old along, no camera, just the lens in my cargo shorts pocket. She wants me to takes the littles for a walk. I had ZERO intent to ever think of pocketing this sucker, but alas I have cargo shorts, baby in one hand, here comes momma… I stuff the thing in my cargo pocket… and it fits!? Like what? Barely, granted, still I’m shocked. Right as I’d finished unboxing it, putting the box away and have it in my hand, she turns the corner. So this thing arrives FedEx, although I warned the wife I bought it, I still have been quiet about it. I’d still like to see Canon take another stab at the 70-300 DO, that was an interesting concept lens, but, at $499 on sale, and not having to worry about reduced contrast or odd bokeh? Maybe this as good as it gets… It’s smaller than an R with an EF 70-300 IS USM II adapted. In fact, it’s not much larger or heavier than a Rebel SL2+EF-S 55-250 IS STM. But it’s also light and compact for what it is. The RF 100-400 is certainly larger than equivalent crop lenses. But, I figured if the 100-400 didn’t work on the R8, nothing can, and besides, I could always return it… Boy, Canon has proved me wrong. Why? I’d given up on lightweight and compact telephoto on FF. However, leading up to buying it, I was seriously considering (re) purchasing the R50 w/18-45 and 55-210 kit, with the intent of using the R50 exclusively for telephoto use with the 55-210 and pairing it with my R8 and non-telephoto lenses. Courtesy of the B&H sale, I splurged on a discounted RF100-400.
